Statements regarding my practice

22 September 2011

After going through the briefs and re-rationalising our design practice, we then went on to make short statements that would sum up our design practice in relation to our briefs and what we intend to do:

"A...investigation of...with a focus on..." - this was our inspiration statement to help get the ball rolling.

TOP 5:
 1. Media and Type with a focus on traditional processes
(ERASE) - Inspirational processes and what i want to product
2. Typographic composition with a focus on traditional processes
(MIXED MEDIA)

3. A typographic investigation of media with a focus on traditional processes
(COWBOY BRANDING - Letterpress) (WHISKY LABELS - Letterpress)
4. Packaging and type with a focus on traditional processes
(PASTRY SHOP) (APOTHECARY)
5. An editorial investigation of magazines/publications with a focus on media and processes
(LACK MAGAZINE) (MOD)

1st day in 3rd year

Today we had a really productive day, breaking down the importance of the rational and focusing our briefs. This has really helped me gage a more direct view of where I need to be going and what my design practice is really about. It's helped me focus on what I want to get out of my briefs, and what I want to do this year in order to get the most out of my 3rd year.

We came up with a load of lists that relate directly to me and my design practice....

We first started off looking at 'Things I want to do' and 'Things I want to achieve'

Things I want to do:                                                   Things I want to Achieve:

Work with more media - printing techniques             deadlines
Collaboration between year and courses                    A range of small time placements throughout this
Web design - Viral marketing (get the hang               year
of it)                                                                           Security and confidence in my design practice
Find new and interesting ways to document my        A balance between uni and life..

Exterior shop sign

24 May 2011

Really like this style of displaying the logo on here, after looking at
vectors and the shop display i have settled on the idea that i would like
to photoshop the signs and the shop. i think this is a really nice way to contextualize
the products and the shop. It would be fairly simple to do as well. I like the pink
and the brown type, they work so well together.

layout and cover for bakery

really like the clean crisp layout and how everything lines
up. Its a little bit old school and not the exact style i'm thinking of but i do like it.
I also really like the illustration that runs across the whole of
the front of the cover. I like the type and the layout, but its not exactly to
my test.

Bakery and Menu layout

I really like this layout for a menu, and how the grid
splits it so well. I like how the prices are lined up and there
is quite a lot of white space between the prices and food. I like
the dark banner around it, squaring it off and outlining where the
products are.

really like the logo and the colour scheme, looks like a donut.
It has such an appeal because of the choice of colours.

Really like the patterend background, something to think about
for the ingredients packaging if i have time to create it.

Bakery and Website

23 May 2011

Because i am creating a website for my bakery i have been looking at websites that would be similar to the idea i have in mind for my website. I think the layout of this website is lovely, although the illustrations arn't really to my taste. I really like the banner across the top and how easily it would be to function. I think its such a colourful website, and it has a really homely ouch to it making it personal.

Bakery and Website

I am interested in the design of websites for bakerys. What i particularly like about this website is the vibrant colours and the thick titles and huge images. My only problem with it is the colour choices, i really don't think they work. I appreciate that they come from the logo, which is where mine will but i just think it looks quite ugly. I think the colours and the logo work but there is way too much going on here.

Fayes Bakery

This was a re-branding project, i am more interested
in the colours than i am in the logo, i don't think the logo is particularly
good. I like the F but thats all you really see.

Really love the colour choices, those pale pastel colours
against a cream making them more vibrant. They create
such a clean shape and design

Logo and packaging for bakerys

22 May 2011

I think the logo works so well because it can easily be transfered across
from product to product, making it available in a range of colours means it
can offset against the particular background.

Business cards and promotion, im not too sure
what the ripping quality is for, but i like the bright colour
on the brown background it really stands out. Although
i think the logo is slightly miss aligned.

Really like the slab serif dont, not too sure about the
heart in it..don't think that works it makes it looks a little
cheap. But the colour looks really nice, making it soft and almost
like icing. I like the slight shading underneath that adds a definition to it.

Bakery exterior

I want to do a mock up shop for my cupcake shop, i normally would vector but im not sure how effective it will be. I have been looking at vectored bakeries just to see how appropriate it is. I like the vector for this but i think it looks a little clinical, i think i would rather photoshop it just to get a more realistic feel to it.

Editorial

I think i am more in love with the idea of this then the layout per say, however the layout is beauitufl. Love the crisp lines and the fine type contrasting to the huge images. I love the idea of a type bakery, a whole magazine related to type and food. What more could you want?

Really love the intricate layout of the type on the
right hand side, it looks really clean and crisp. Especially
with the huge image on the opposing page.

Cloudberry - Packaging

21 May 2011

Really like the little stamped logo on the see through
packaging, i think it looks really sophisticated because
it doesn't detract from the products inside, and it looks
really dainty.

I am interested in this sort of packaging for my
ingredients packaging, I like the layout but i think
its quite different to mine. Although like the big logo followed
by the small type.

Des Sens - illustrations and packaging

20 May 2011

As i will be using small element of illustrations with my design i wanted to see what was already out there and the style. what i particularly like about this packaging is the simple designs, i think this is more me then fancy illustrations. They are really crisp and visual. I also really like the colours used i think they are really bright and vibrant which immediately engages. By having contrasting colours for different illustrations really works nicely because they are so offset.

Simple but clear logo, looks really clear set against the
cream background. Clean type works well within it, because it's so thick.

Logo and packaging for bakerys

I really like this logo because of its thick serifed font, i think it creates
such a striking image against the background. I think the logo is really clear and legible.
I am not too sure about the colours for the logo but then they are transfered onto the packaging
they work really well.

Really like the packaging, i think the logo works a lot better on the packaging because
of the illustrations and the solid coloured background instead of the circle background.
I think the box packaging is really nice, because its taken an original idea
and made it completely their own, putting their stamp in it, this is essentially what I want
to be doing

Packaging and branding

19 May 2011

I really like the intricate designs on this logo, i think
it works really nicely with the serif type. It being thick,
it really stands out clearly and looks really really ncie on the
brown background.

I really like the wrap around, i think its more for the substrate
more than the design, i really like the mottled appeal it looks really
attractive. I can imagine it being very textured.

Logo and Corporate

What i like most about these logos is the vibrant colours offset
against the dark backgrounds. I also really like the type used,
the slab serif linked together making it fit with the background having
that rippled effect. I think it works well together because it really illustrates the product,
which is what i wanted to create with my logo.

Bakery identity and corporate

I will be proposing some corporate identity for my products, and i want to see what's already been done stationary wise just to see whether there's a style or a way that would be appropriate to me work. I really like the style of this corporate identity for pennyfields bakery, i really love the pattern and the layout.
Really like the background being patterned,
I think its a nice contrast I would defiantly like
to try this out maybe with my designs. Not so much the pattern
but the contrast.

Really like the coloured and black and white logo
it looks really attractive, and sticks out against the
background. I think its such a strong image.
