THE UNIVERSITY OF HUDDERSFIELD'S STUDENTS UNION
REALLY LIKE THIS STYE OF ILLUSTRATION. I REALLY LIKE HOW EVERYTHING IS ONTOP OF EVERYTHING CAUSING A VERY COMPLICATED IMAGE. WHAT I FIND MOST INTERESTING EVEN THOUGH THE IMAGE APPEARS QUITE COMPLEX THE ACTUAL ILLUSTRATIONS THEMSELVES ARE SIMPLE. COMBINED WITH THE UNELABORATED COLOUR SCHEME, MEANS THAT EVERYTHING CAN BE VIEWED AS A WHOLE OR INDIVIDUALLY. I WANT MY WORK TO TAKE ON THIS STYLE, IN MY OWN WAY. I THINK ITS A FASCINATING WAY OF COLLABORATING ALL YOUR IMAGES TO FORM ONE LARGE IMAGE.

ANON.
BOTH OF THE IMAGES BELOW ARE TAKEN FROM SEPARATE SOURCES. THE FIRST IS LOOKING AT 3D DESIGNER TOYS, HERE IS NOTHING TOO SPECIAL ABOUT THESE OTHER THAN TE FACT THAT THEY ARE COLLECTORS ITEMS. THEY FOLLOW THE SAME CONCEPT AS KIDROBOT ETC. ALTHOUGH THESE TOYS LOOK LIKE THEY HAVE BEEN TAKEN FROM SUPER-MARIO/SONIC.
I LIKE THE IMAGE BELOW BECAUSE IT COMBINES BOTH INSTILLATION ART AND LIGHT GRAFFITI, I JUST THINK ITS A REALLY VISUALLY ENGAGING PIECE. I LIKE THE ILLUSTRATIONS AS WELL, I REALLY LIKE THE 'RABBIT' TYPE IMAGE CAUGHT IN THE BACKGROUND.
This is the 'Stranger than fiction' credits
I really like the style and find it
all really
interesting to watch. I like the way
it all flows from one
to another and each image inter-
links with a part of the story told through-
out the film.
What is a line... Postcard
Posted by Robyn Russell at 06:23 Labels: 1st Year, 2nd Year 15 April 2010
Looking at a variety of different postcards that i have collected, and the different styles used across them.
For the other part of my research i am looking at postcard designs. In my book i have given a more detailed analysis, but here i am giving an overall evaluation of the postcards. Firstly, i noticed that the majority of the cards were used in one form of advertising or the other not just as an entertainment piece. Which made me think, i don't want to advertise anything so therefore create a card that is just for someone to pick up and collect, possibly. I also really like the illustrative style that ran across some of the cards, i like the simplicity and directness of them. I defiantly preferred the simpler cards, i think if you throw too much detail on a small card everything will just get lost and it won't look great. I am also not that keen on the type and image that was used on the postcards, like i said before its such a small space and it can lead to overcrowding which means too much distracting. I think the restricted colour palette worked the best on the cards, it means you can pick out specific detail and will help with continuity when creating a set.
When it comes to the card that was used i prefer handling the textured card, it adds another dimension to the piece but when it comes to looks i actually prefer the smooth card. It lets you pick out more detail, the image looks crisper and the colours are more powerful. This is something i will have to look into a great deal.
PEPSI MAX
I do not understand why the have rebranded pepsi. I don't see the point, the designs they had before were visually engaging and interesting to look at. This new set just looks like some low budget coke you would get from Lidle or something, people who cant actually afford brilliant graphic designers. Fair enough try and make your branding simpler but i think they have gone too far. Also my boyfriend is completely addicted to Pepsi max and i think would rather stop breathing instead of give up drinking the stuff (personally i cant stand it), but what i am trying to say is, he hates the new logo. And being one of the most loyal customers i think they should have gradually toned it down instead of just throwing this out.

NEASDEN CONTROL CENTER - ROJO OUT
Now i think these guys are great graphic designers. However, i really dont like this piece of work. I think there is too much clashing and its really hard to get your attention on one key piece. I think this style works well but you have to be careful with what colours you use, if any. There is no point to this piece other then entertainment, which i appreciate but it just isn't to my taste at all.

this is advertising and branding relating to the Kanikarg report. I think this is cleverly done, and a lot of time and effort has gone into producing this set of reports. especially about the fact they are trying to make a statement about the fact they are using one of the natural elements local to the island. I think its a beautiful set of graphic design and it makes something that would normally be boring and mundane into something that is eye catching and enjoyable to read.
DEVIANTART
I really love this image. I think they have all the colours work really well together. Each illustration is easy to see and understand and you can relate to it. I really like the unamused face on the girl which works well with the lavish title 'lets make a sandwich'. The whole piece is humorous but in a subtle way, its clever and well thought out.

DEVIANTART
I like manga, and i like bright colours. However, this is too much! It makes the piece look so crass. I like the idea but the mixture of bright and then pastel colours just doesn't work for me at all. The image is only striking because of the colours and then after that you completely loose the meaning of the piece. I like work to have some sort of point to it, even if its just something to hang on the wall.. you couldnt hang this on the wall, its too much.

UNKNOWN
This image is used in a brochure, i think it looks amazing and space age. I know there is no real graphic design going on within the piece, but combined with the rest of the brochure it really does help engage the reader. It makes you want to know what these bubbles are and why they are there? I think an image that makes one question its purpose works really well because it is making the viewer think about the piece and therefore they remember it in the future.

WALLPAPER
I love this design. Its simplicity is the key to its success. The designers hasn't gone over the top with the illustration or the colours. The beveled approach to it gives it an added texture. the bevel will also catch the light and reflect the beautiful cold illustration in different ways creating a magnitude of different hues to entice the viewer. I think it works so well and would look amazing on a wall.

LETTERHEAD
this is a letterhead design used to advertise a camping holiday agency. Now i am not a fan of the rest of the image but i wanted to focus on the screen printing used to create the caravan. This image shows the detail and the fusion's of colour you can gain from successful screen printing, i think its a lovely image. The colours promote a certain warmth which you could relate to for a family summer holiday. its clever and it targets its audience well.

REGAL SEALS
This is an embossed letterhead. I think the type works perfectly with the image that brand is trying to represent. The colour scheme works in harmony with the product and generally gives a very professional yet welcoming feel to it, as if it is a family business. I like that they havent been all flowery and excentric which is what you might expect from something 'regal'. The designers have rounded the edges to give it a more contemporary feel to it.

AIRPORT ADVERTISING
I think this is great, i love it when graphic designers slightly alter your mundane symbols to create something that is humorous and more engaging. Its a clever use of lines and there is no colour needed. Simplicity is the key when designing travel symbols, they need to be universally understood and everyone can relate and recognise what they represent which is very important.
for TIM KEY
Designed for the Edinburgh Fringe festival, this is a brochure designed for the comedian Tim Key. I really like style of the print work, i think the design is interesting and its nice to see comedians taking more interest in how they publicise themselves instead of just printing of some cak handed flyer.

UNKNOWN
I really cannot stand this style of illustration. the piece is too grany. I really don't like the blue thats been used. The angles are too sharp, and it just seems to me to be quite pretencious. I just reminds me of budget christmas cards that an older not quite with it relative might send you at christmas. I screams cheap, and uninteresting.

GRAFIK - new edition cover.
Now i am an avid fan of grafik magazine and what it produces, but for some reason i really cannot stand this front cover. I am all up for geometric patterns and splash colour, however i just dont think this works. I dont like the use of colour and i don't think there is anything that special about the pattern itself. It isn't that visually engaging and to be honest quite bland. The symmetry is the only real thing going for it to be honest. I don't like the type being used on the front either, i just dont think the type face goes with the image that well and i think if they had that much faith in the image they should have just left it with the grafik title and let it lye.

SNOOK.
I really like this layout and design. type and image at its simplest and most effective. the space within the book is used effectively. This is very good for a shoe magazine, there's nothing much going on about it, it has a childish look but created for an adult. its interesting to look at and to hold, with various dimensions going on.

CHRISTINE BERRIE - CONSUME - TIME OUT MAGAZINE
I like the idea of the piece and i think it speaks volume for the column and the magazine itself. However, i like my illustration work to be simple, using a mixture of lines and making it intricate. I cannot stand the use of pencil crayon its just a pet hate of mine, especially when you can see the direction lines. I think the book itself is good, but i cant stand the background. With crayons you need to know when to stop. for me it just feels very childish.
